Description

The “Learning Meaningful Representation of Life” group (PI Paul Villoutreix) of the Turing Center for Living Systems and Marseille Medical Genetics Institute has an open position for a Postdoctoral researcher in Machine Learning and Bioinformatics for the Multi-Modal study of tissue biology.

Project: Recent developments in multi-omics methods and progress in imaging techniques yields unprecedented opportunities to better understand biological systems in healthy and pathological states. Designing theoretical and computational approaches for the joint analysis of multi-omics datasets and spatial data obtained from imaging is currently one of the most relevant and challenging questions in computational biology. The ever-increasing size and complexity of these datasets make them difficult to explore manually. With this project, we would like to develop machine learning and computational approaches for the multi-modal study of tissues based on novel data integration strategies and network-based predictive models. The resulting approaches will be applied to datasets obtained for studies of rare genetic diseases with the aim of characterizing cell and tissue heterogeneity as a basis to predict disease progression and response to drugs.

Environment: The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary environment composed of mathematicians, computer scientists and biologists (https://bioml.lis-lab.fr - Villoutreix team). Moreover, the candidate will benefit from the vibrant environment of the Networks and Systems Biology team at MMG (https://www.marseille-medical-genetics.org/a-baudot/), the Turing Center for Living Systems (https://centuri-livingsystems.org), and the Machine Learning team of the Computer Science department (https://qarma.lis-lab.fr ). In addition, this project will benefit from an ongoing collaboration with Robert Kelly’s lab ( https://www.ibdm.univ-amu.fr/team/genetic-control-of-heart-development/ )

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Mathematical Biology, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or related fields
  • Experience in the development and application of Machine Learning methods
  • Previous experience in the use and development of R/python packages for biological omics data analysis would be an asset
  • Experience with -omics data and/or experience with network science is a plus
  • Good communications skills in an interdisciplinary environment
