Description
Position Summary: Transformation of the global food system towards more sustainable and equitable outcomes is urgently needed, requiring an evidence-based food systems approach. The Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems aims to transform the existing food systems in Ireland and the UK, addressing economic, social, health and environmental problems to ensure safe nutritious food for all. Our research will consider specific challenges addressing food system integrity and resilience, food safety and healthy diets from sustainable sources. The Co-Centre brings together academics from multiple disciplines, including the natural sciences, trade, economics, politics, political economy and law. It will foster research and innovation to accelerate radical transitions towards a more environmentally and economically sustainable and transparent agri-food sector. The appointee will be based in a bioinformatics research group led by Prof. Denis Shields within the Data Modelling Platform. The purpose of the role is to deliver a specific research project. This will progress our goal of understanding the breakdown and modification of protein in food preparation and in digestion, and the persistence of food peptides in the body. These will be related to food intake, food preparation, microbiome variation, metabolomic variation, protease specificities, peptide allergens and clinical status. This will include the analysis of mass spectrometric datasets of peptides and proteins in food and human (e.g. stool) samples. Arising from this, the appointee will develop and disseminate specialised peptide software, datasets and analyses.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities: ● Manage and conduct the research programme described above. ● Hands-on development and implementation of computational resources and methods. ● Disseminate the outcomes of this research and scholarship including peer-reviewed academic publications of international standing. ● Contribute to the further development of the research programme by assisting in applications for appropriate external funding. ● Develop and manage bioinformatics collaborations with co-centre members and others. ● Participate fully in the wider research and scholarly activities of the Co-centre. ● Co-supervise and mentor early stage researchers. ● Take responsibility for, manage and conduct administrative and management tasks associated with the programme of research.Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by Principal Investigator.
Salary Range: €52,000 - €62,000 Per Annum Appointment on the above range will be dependent on qualifications and experience
