To make our vision a reality, we are looking for an excellent bioinformatician  excited to join our team.  

As Head of Bioinformatics at Phagos, you will be a key leader in our R&D team, shaping the future of our scientific and technological advancements. You will build and lead a high-performing bioinformatics team, driving innovation in bacterial and phage genomics, and developing cutting-edge computational tools to accelerate our research. Your expertise will directly influence the company’s success, from optimizing phage therapy applications in animal health to expanding our bioinformatics capabilities. Key responsibilities

  • Build and lead the Bioinformatics team
    • Recruit top talents, structure the team, and ensure the team has the necessary tools and expertise to achieve research and innovation goals. 
    • Foster a high-performance, collaborative culture where all team members work efficiently toward shared goals. 
    • Manage resources and project timelines, ensuring efficient execution of bioinformatics initiatives that align with operational and R&D objectives.
    • Lead by example, mentoring junior team members and supporting them in their career development.
  • Drive innovation:
    • Identify and integrate emerging bioinformatics methodologies and trends.
    • Stay at the forefront of microbial genomics and synthetic biology, leveraging the latest advancements and discoveries to drive scientific and technological breakthroughs in the company
    • Represent the company in scientific collaborations, publications, and industry conferences, establishing thought leadership in microbial bioinformatics.
    • Collaborate with internal scientists from the data team to develop and deploy ML-based solutions.
  • Ensure quality:
    • Oversee pipeline and tool development, ensuring robust, scalable, and automated bioinformatics workflows
    • Develop and implement training programs to ensure all staff follow best practices. Spot weaknesses, ask qualified team members to train members in need. Spot general needs and organise training sessions if needed.

 

Required qualifications

  • PhD (or equivalent experience) in bioinformatics, computational biology, or related fields.
  • Strong expertise in bacterial genomics, phage genomics and host-pathogen interactions, metagenomics and comparative genomics.
  • Expertise in synthetic biology and protein structure 
  • Experience with cloud computing (Azure, GCP and/or AWS)
  • Proficiency in machine learning applications for bioinformatics is a plus.
  • Proficiency with pipeline automation tools like Nextflow and Docker.
  • Fluency in programming languages such as BASH or R.
  • Ability to sensibly unify / standardize our code base
  • A track record of high-impact publications and contributions to open-source bioinformatics tools.
  • Leadership experience with a proven track record of managing team objectives to ensure timely and effective project delivery.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, highly collaborative startup environment, leading innovation-driven projects.
